Sharks face Guangdong in playoffs

The Shanghai Sharks made it to the 2013-14 offseason by finishing eighth in the 18-team Chinese Basketball Association league after their 106-98 home win over former champions Beijing Ducks yesterday.

American Quincy Douby scored a game-high 35 points, and captain Liu Wei contributed with 18 points and 7 rebounds in the Sharks’ last regular season match at Pudong’s Yuanshen Stadium.

The Sharks led all the way as the Ducks committed a series of unforced errors. Beijing had already clinched a spot in the playoffs and ended the regular season in the fourth place.

Guangdong Southern Tigers topped the CBA table, followed by Xinjiang Flying Tigers and defending champion Dongguan Leopards. Dongguan edged Guangdong 112-110 at home yesterday, while Xinjiang saw off Tianjin Gold Lions 105-93.

The off-season kicks off on Tuesday with Liaoning taking on Xinjiang and Tianjin playing Dongguan.

On Wednesday, Shanghai will welcome Guangdong. Elsewhere, Beijing will lock horns with Zhejiang Lions.

After an eventful start in November, the Sharks struggled with issues off the court. Veteran head coach Wang Qun resigned citing family issues after just five rounds.

The club then turned to young coach Wang Yong, and signed Australian Rob Beveridge in December to assist Wang. However, the former Australian national youth team head coach also left the team earlier this month.

The Sharks finished 14th last season.
