Sharks give new coach a winning start
SHANGHAI'S acting head coach Wang Qun got off to a winning start as the Sharks put out an all-round performance in the CBA for a 92-72 victory over the visiting Tianjin Gold Lions yesterday.
The Sharks were also helped by the return of their inspirational skipper Liu Wei, who contributed 25 points in the win.
The Sharks were 4-13 before yesterday's game that led to the departure of their American coach Daniel Panaggio on Saturday. Long-time assistant coach Wang Qun was moved up and it had the desired effect - at least for the game yesterday.
For Sharks, D.J. White notched a game-high 26 points and 14 rebounds.
Liu was back after missing four games with injury.
"There's nothing special for me to guide the team," Wang Qun said. "I have known the team well."
Wang praised the players' efforts and the work done by Panaggio. "One victory does not tell much but we appreciate the spirit."
Wang, who is a Shanghai native, has been with the team since 2002, when it won its only championship.
The Sharks were able to keep the lead throughout the game because of Tianjin's poor shooting percentage, giving a chance to their young players in the fourth quarter. However, the team still faces a difficult task of getting into the playoffs this season.
The Sharks finished in the 6th place last season under Panaggio.
"Now a single victory seems like a wild dream. It's still a very difficult time for us with a lot of pressure," said Wang. "We need something positive."
Tianjin is 10th in the CBA table while the Shanghai is 16th in the 17-team league.
Elsewhere, the Qingdao Eagles, with just one win in the CBA remains at the bottom of the league after losing again - 110-129 to Foshan Long Lions. Stephon Marbury's 37 points was not enough as the defending champions Beijing Ducks lost 103-105 to the Jilin Northern Tigers.
