Sharks hold on to edge the Dragons

THE Shanghai Sharks just held on against the Shanxi Brave Dragons for a 92-90 win yesterday, giving them their second victory in a row against a winning team.

With the seconds ticking down under 10, Shanxi needed just two points to put the game into overtime, but Dragon guard Marcus Williams wanted to win in regulation.

Williams had been taking and making tough shots all game, already connecting on three from long range, but his last attempt bounced off the rim as the Shanghai crowd breathed a collective sigh of relief.

What had been a choppy and physical first three quarters turned into an exciting back and forth game in the fourth quarter that was both crowd-pleasing and nerve-racking.

Shanghai head coach Daniel Panaggio thought his team's excellent start ended up being the reason for the win. The Sharks jumped out to a 12-2 lead thanks to a couple of Zhang Zhaoxu tip-ins and tough defense. They kept the lead the whole game pushing it to 16 points in the second quarter.

But the Dragons fought back starting in the second half. Star forward Charles Gaines, held to only 2 points in the first half and no field goals, put up 19 after half time. Gaines along with Marcus Williams, who scored 31 points and some timely shooting from forward Duan Jiangpeng gave Shanxi a chance to win at the end.

Mike Harris led Shanghai with a season-high 30 points, making big shot after big shot in the fourth quarter. Zhang had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Sharks go on a three game road trip from Sunday.
