Sharks keep it late to roar past Tianjin
THE Shanghai Sharks came out on top in a nail-biting 89-85 away win against the Tianjin Lions yesterday.
The home side, which was coming into the game as the third worst side in the league, had no intentions of giving the Sharks an easy game and their guests will count themselves lucky to have escaped from the Tianjin Arena with a victory.
Marcus Landry was a critical player for the Sharks and it was the former New York Knicks player that helped his team set the pace in the early stages of the game with some aggressive drives to the basket. However, Zhang Nan was just as hot as Landry, and the Tianjin forward's cool finishing helped the Lions to a 50-46 lead at halftime.
Tianjin continued to control an error-strewn game when the sides returned after the interval. As well as having to deal with Zhang's mid-range shooting, the Sharks were now also having to deal with Herve Lamazina, who has became an increasingly problematic force in the paint.
Yet with the game seemingly fading away in front of them, the Sharks suddenly went on an improbably scoring run that allowed them to get within a basket of the lead with under a minute to go and right on cue, the ball found its way to Landry on the far left of the perimeter.
The American, who had been making clutch shots for the entirety of the game, came through at the crucial moment and buried his three-pointer, and from out of nowhere, the Sharks were suddenly leading 86-85 with barely thirty seconds left.
When Zhang missed his own shot from long range, Tianjin had little choice but to concede cheap free-throws to get the ball back, allowing Mike Harris and then Meng Lingyuan to ensure the Sharks' last gasp victory.
The Sharks will start their postseason campaign against the Shanxi Dragons.
