Sharks playoff hopes dashed after another defeat

THE Shanghai Sharks playoff hopes are all but over after they surrendered at the Foshan Long Lions 128-112 in their CBA league match in overtime yesterday.

It was the Sharks first overtime game this season and their fifth-straight loss. Inspirational Sharks skipper Liu Wei missed the game with an ankle injury.

Foshan's American player, Shavlik Randolph, notched a game-high 38 points and 25 rebounds to lead the team to victory despite its poor performance on the free-throw line.

For the Sharks, Gilbert Arenas struggled with low shooting percentage, managing seven out of 25 shots and 21 points. He also had five assists. Shanghai's other American player, D.J. White, scored 27 points and 11 rebounds.

The win effectively ended the Sharks hopes of making the playoffs.

White, whose one-year contract runs out at the end of the season, said the Sharks will be his first-choice team if he continues playing in the CBA.

Elsewhere in the CBA yesterday, Stephon Marbury scored 48 points to help the Beijing Ducks snap a two-game loss with a 118-105 win over the Dongguan Leopards. League leader the Guangdong Southern Tigers extended their run of victories to an impressive 15 with a 112-90 win over the Liaoning Jiebao.
