Sharks spoil Donewald's return to city
IN front of a raucous home crowd the Shanghai Sharks upset the Xinjiang Flying Tigers 88-84 yesterday in a heart-stopping and emotional game marking the return of former Shanghai head coach Bob Donewald Jr.
Liu Ziqui found a cutting Ryan Forehan-Kelly for the go-ahead basket. Forehan-Kelly faked Xinjiang center Mengke Bateer into the air and converted an easy reverse layup with 50 seconds left to give Shanghai its first lead in the 4th quarter.
Kenyon Martin tried to respond, but the former Nugget was blanketed by Mike Harris and his spinning shot bounced off the rim as the crowd exploded. Sharks fans were on their feet for the final four minutes of the game as Shanghai ended with an 8-0 run. The Sharks reflected the crowd's energy diving on the floor for loose balls and forcing turnovers.
Xinjiang head coach Bob Donewald Jr. said his team didn't play with poise down the stretch. "Turnovers down the stretch cost us the game," he said. "But give them a lot of credit. They played with passion."
The Sharks players looked they had a little extra something to play for with Donewald's return. Mike Harris led Shanghai in scoring with 24, including 11 in the fourth quarter. Foreham-Kelly had 19 and Zhang Zhaoxu had 13.
Patty Mills led Xinjiang with 22. Martin had 20. Tiger sharpshooter Xu Guochong had 19 points hitting 5 of 7 threes.
Donewald reminisced about his time in Shanghai after the game. "Seeing the crowd, brought back a lot memories for me, a lot of good memories."
The Shanghai Sharks will try to build on their momentum again when they play the Shanxi Brave Dragons on Friday at home.
