Sharks' streak snapped in Jilin
AFTER a fine run of games, the Shanghai Sharks came crashing down to earth after a disappointing 82-95 defeat to the Jilin Tigers in Changchun.
The Sharks worked hard and showed flashes of the form that propelled them to the top half of the CBA table but ultimately were undone by a swashbuckling performance from Jilin's point guard, Osama Daghles.
A nervy Sharks team had difficulty finding any real momentum in the first quarter and quickly found themselves struggling to contain the deft passing of Daghles, who was pulling Shanghai's defense one way and then the other. A barrage of well taken shots from Lu Wei was enough to help ease the Tigers into a 21-16 lead after the first twelve minutes, to the delight of a vocal home crowd.
Daghles would be the architect of further problems for Shanghai before the halftime interval, and having seen the Sharks tie the score at the start of the second quarter thanks to Mike Harris' graft, the Jordanian turned on the style, either coolly finishing off scoring chances himself or setting up a number of opportunities for his teammates to convert.
With Lu continuing to be accurate from range and the former Washington Wizard forward, Cartier Martin, also finding his scoring touch, Jilin was playing some swaggering basketball which the Sharks were struggling to resist. The Tigers would go in at half time leading 49-38 and things looked ominous for the visitors' winning streak.
Onslaught
The onslaught continued after the interval and despite the Sharks fighting gamely, Jilin continued to find gaps in the away side's defensive lines and extend its lead further.
Harris and Marcus Landry were doing their best to stop the bleeding but the home side had the wind in their sails.
Shanghai mounted a comeback of sorts in the final quarter but the Sharks' night was summed up when having closed Jilin's lead to six points, the away side then turned the ball over on its next possession, allowing Daghles to scamper down the court and score on a turnover.
In other CBA scores, Beijing won 101-100 against Xinjiang in Urumqi, while Zhejiang Bulls lost 101-105 to the Bayi Rockets.
