Sharks tame Smith's Bulls to boost playoff chances
THE Shanghai Sharks boosted their playoff hopes yesterday besting the J.R. Smith-led Zhejiang Bulls 87-75.
With the two teams entering the final period tied at 59, it was thought J.R. Smith would lead the visiting side to victory. The former Denver Nugget has dazzled Chinese fans, leading the league in scoring with 35 points a game. In his last two he scored 60 and 44 points. He only had 19 points in the first three quarters of this game. Surely he was due?
Instead, Shanghai imports Mike Harris and Carl Landry took charge, helping their team pull away early in the quarter. Harris struggled to knock down his signature mid-range jumper the whole game, so instead he crashed the boards tallying 21 rebounds and earning 31 points in the game. With the game in doubt, he battled for six offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter and turned them into 12 points.
Landry knocked down two three-pointers in the final period to give Shanghai a comfortable margin. The two shots were the Sharks only made threes in the game. Landry finished with 24 points and 8 rebounds.
Shanghai head coach Daniel Panaggio thought its lockdown defense, which allowed just 16 points in the deciding quarter, was the key to the game and pointed especially to Meng Lingyuan.
"His defense was phenomenal and absolutely critical to the win tonight," Panaggio said after the match.
