Sharks unveil 2 new signings
THE Shanghai Sharks unveiled the team’s two new signings this week — American guard AJ Price and former Guangdong Southern Tigers guard Liu Xiaoyu.
The 26-year-old Liu spent his last nine years with Chinese Basketball Association powerhouse Guangdong. The Chinese national team point guard will be given the No. 10 jersey, and fans expect him to become another Liu Wei — the Sharks former captain who joined Xinjiang Flying Tigers last year.
“There are many young players on the team. Being an experienced player, I will help complete the team’s organization,” said Liu. “However, compared to Liu Wei, I have a lot to improve in my personal ability. I want to assimilate into the team as soon as possible.”
Price started his National Basketball Association career with the Indiana Pacers, and has also played for the Washington Wizards, Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers and Phoenix Suns. The 28-year-old is confident about his pick and roll, and shooting skills.
“I hope to spend more time with my teammates to practice (the skills). I have also been trying to catch up with the team’s history in the last couple of years. I know the career of team owner Yao (Ming), who won a CBA championship for the club,” said Price.
Meanwhile, it was revealed that American center Bernard James, who joined the Sharks in the middle of last season, will stay on Yao’s team for the new season, which kicks off at the end of next month. James averaged 19.1 points and 11.2 rebounds last season.
