Sixers confirm talks with Iverson

THE Philadelphia 76ers met with their former guard Allen Iverson on Monday to explore the possibility of the four-times NBA scoring champion returning to his old team.

"This afternoon, we met with free agent Allen Iverson in Dallas for the first formal discussion regarding a possible return to the Philadelphia 76ers," Sixers general manager Ed Stefanski said on the team's Website.

Stefanski said the meeting lasted about two hours and was attended by Allen, his agent, and Philadelphia head coach Eddie Jordan among others. The Sixers were in Dallas for a game against the Mavericks on Monday.

Philadelphia, which has lost six straight games for a 5-12 record this season, could use backcourt help after point guard Lou Williams broke his jaw last week against the Washington Wizards and was expected to be sidelined for eight weeks.

Iverson, 34, a 10-time All-Star, announced his intention to retire last week when no other team expressed interest in signing him after he and the Memphis Grizzlies decided to part ways.

He played 10 seasons with the 76ers, was traded to Denver in December 2006, and then dealt to Detroit early last season. The top overall pick in the 1996 college draft, Iverson led the Sixers to the NBA finals in 2001 and was named the league MVP that season.
