Sixers stun Celtics with late heroics

SPENCER Hawes and Elton Brand each scored 14 points to steer the Philadelphia 76ers to a 89-86 home win over the Boston Celtics on Friday.

Andre Iguodala contributed 13 points and Jodie Meeks chipped in with 12 as the 76ers (34-31) upset the Eastern Conference leading Celtics (46-17).

The Celtics recovered from a 10-point deficit in the third quarter to lead 81-79 when Ray Allen drained a three-pointer with just over six minutes left on the clock.

However, Philadelphia outscored Boston 10-5 down the stretch with Jrue Holiday and Louis Williams both making jump shots to seal victory.

The Celtics missed eight straight baskets over a six-minute span late in the fourth to lose only their eighth conference game of the season.

Jeff Green scored a game-high 18 points for the Celtics while Nenad Krstic had 16 points and 15 rebounds.

Elsewhere in the National Basketball Association, it was: Bulls 94, Hawks 76; Warriors 123, Magic 120 (in overtime); Spurs 108, Kings 103; Bobcats 97, Trail Blazers 92; Thunder 104, Pistons 94; Timberwolves 122, Jazz 101; Nets 102, Clippers 98 (in OT); and Raptors 108, Pacers 98.

In Chicago, Derrick Rose came on strong after a slow start to finish with 34 points as the Bulls beat the Hawks to move within half a game of the Celtics.

The Bulls used a strong third quarter to prevail on a night when Carlos Boozer sat out with a sprained left ankle.

Leading the way was Rose with 18 points in the period as Chicago outscored Atlanta 24-10 to turn a two-point halftime deficit into a 72-60 lead.

Luol Deng shook off a bruised thigh to add 18 points.
