Thunder level Spurs series

OKLAHOMA City Thunder held on to beat San Antonio 98-97 in a frantic and contentious finish to Game 2 of their NBA Western Conference semifinal series on Monday, inflicting only a second home loss of the season on the Spurs and squaring the series 1-1.

Russell Westbrook had 29 points and 10 assists, including one on the game-winning basket, while Kevin Durant added 28 points as the Thunder responded impressively to a 32-point beating in Game 1.

In Monday’s other playoff game, LeBron James led the Cleveland Cavaliers past the Atlanta Hawks 104-93 in the opening game of that series.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich complained to officials after the game that Dion Waiters went over the allotted five seconds to inbound the ball on Oklahoma City’s final possession which decided the game.

Replays showed Waiters elbowed Manu Ginobili to get the space needed to pass the ball to Durant; an apparent offensive foul that was not called.

Durant was immediately stripped of the ball by Danny Green to give the Spurs a winning chance. San Antonio’s Patty Mills missed an open 3-pointer from the corner, LaMarcus Aldridge, who scored 41 points, lost the ball after grabbing it in the air, and Kawhi Leonard was unable to gather the ball before the buzzer sounded.
