Thunder stop the Mavericks

THE Oklahoma City Thunder tightened up on defense in the second half to grab a 99-95 road win over the injury-hit Dallas Mavericks on Thursday in Dallas.

Trailing by as many as 10 points in the first half, the Thunder opened the third quarter with an 11-4 run to take their first lead of the game.

They stretched their advantage to 11 points before the Mavericks' DeShawn Stevenson made it a close contest with a trio of three-pointers in the final 67 seconds.

"In the second half we were good defensively, but everybody knows that this team is battling some injuries and they're a different team than a few weeks ago," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said.

"But we did play good defense in the second half. I'm proud of the guys' effort. I thought we made a lot of good basketball plays."

Kevin Durant scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Thunder, Jeff Green scored 16, Russell Westbrook scored 15 and Serge Ibaka came off the bench and scored 13.

Shawn Marion lead the Mavericks with a season-high 25, but scored just four in the second half, Jason Terry scored 19 points including nine in the final quarter.

In the only other game on the night, the Sacramento Kings defeated the Denver Nuggets 122-102.

Tyreke Evans, the NBA rookie of the year last season, had 27 points and a season-high 12 assists to help the Kings rout the Nuggets.

Evans has struggled for much of the season with foot problems and admitted last month that some family issues were a factor as well. Against the Nuggets, he played effectively throughout, a flashback to his rookie season when he was difficult to stop on a nightly basis.

Evans frequently penetrated the soft Denver defense on drives and made 11 of 18 shots, hit all five free throws and added five rebounds.

"It was one of my best games. I came out and was aggressive," Evans said. "I was attacking and definitely had them on their heels."

The Kings had a 23-2 run midway through the second half to build a 21-point lead.

DeMarcus Cousins added 20 points for the Kings.

Carmelo Anthony had 26 points for the Nuggets.
