Warriors stuff Lakers for 2-0 China series sweep
Despite the raucous cheers of more than 17,000 fans who packed the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Pudong last night, superstar Kobe Bryant was absent from their sights, not even on the bench for the first three quarters, of the 2013 NBA China Game where his Los Angeles Lakers lost 89-115 to the Golden States Warriors.
Bryant, wearing a grey suit, stepped on court in the fourth quarter to a standing ovation, only to watch his team fall to another defeat. The Warriors won the first of the two games in China as part of the 2013 Global Games 100-95 in Beijing last Monday.
“Kobe was just tired,” said Mike D’Antoni, Lakers head coach.
Bryant is sitting out the start of the season as he recovers from a torn Achilles tendon.
Warriors’ Klay Thompson had a game-high 25 points, going 5-of-6 from the 3-point line. Paul Gasol was the Lakers’ top scorer with 16 points.
Warriors’ star Stephen Curry was limited to 9 points, after missing 4-of-5 of his three-point attempts.
The first half was a close affair with the Lakers up 54-52 at the break.
However, the tide turned in the third quarter as the Warriors began to bombard from outside the rim. They scored 15 three-pointers in total.
Shanghai native Yao Ming, who watched the game courtside, got a huge cheer from the crowd before the game.
Since the launch of the NBA cooperation in 2004, when the first NBA China game was held in Shanghai, local sports authorities have viewed it as a chance to boost the city’s image while bringing more games.
“I believe one day there will be NBA regular season games in Shanghai,” Li Minyu, the head of Shanghai sports bureau, said while presenting a honorary award to NBA Commissioner David Stern, who is expected to retire next year after 30 years in the league.
