Wizards secure playoff spot

THE Washington Wizards are headed to the National Basketball Association playoffs for the first time since 2008, punching their postseason ticket on Wednesday with a 118-92 win over Boston.

Marcin Gortat scored 22 points, pulled down eight rebounds and handed out four assists for the Wizards, who got 19 points from Bradley Beal on 7-of-8 shooting from the field. Trevor Ariza chipped in 18 points and seven rebounds for the Wizards and John Wall added 13 points.

Boston reserve Jared Sullinger scored a game-high 25 points, but the Celtics lost their 11th in 12 games.

Washington is currently sixth in the Eastern Conference, where defending champion Miami, Indiana, Toronto, Chicago and Brooklyn are in the postseason.

The New York Knicks kept their push for a playoff spot alive with a 110-81 win over the Brooklyn Nets.

JR Smith made half of his 12 shots from three-point range, scoring 24 points. Carmelo Anthony scored 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Knicks, who moved into a virtual tie with fading Atlanta for the eighth and final spot in the East.

The Chicago Bulls beat the Hawks 105-92 in Atlanta, the Hawks’ seventh defeat in eight games.

Elsewhere, it was: Cavaliers 119, Magic 98; Pacers 101, Pistons 94; Bobcats 123, 76ers 93; Raptors 107, Rockets 103; Heat 96, Bucks 77; Timberwolves 102, Grizzlies 88; Spurs 111, Warriors 90; Nuggets 137, Pelicans 107; Clippers 112, Suns 108; and Kings 107, Lakers 102.
