Wizards take a big bite out of the Raptors

THE Washington Wizards shrugged off the loss of the NBA's top draft pick and their leading scorer John Wall with a superb team effort to beat the Toronto Raptors 109-94 on Tuesday in Washington.

Andray Blatche recorded a team-high 22 points while Gilbert Arenas and Nick Young added 20 apiece as the Wizards thrived without Wall, who was sidelined by a sprained left foot he suffered on Saturday.

Washington (3-6) ended a string of consecutive losses to open a seven-point lead at halftime before surging further ahead with a 15-2 run that gave the home team an 81-59 advantage.

"We played with a great amount of energy," Wizards coach Flip Saunders said. "I liked the way we really shared the ball and played as a team."

Sonny Weems led the way with 16 points for the Raptors, who slipped to 2-9 for the season. Toronto shot just 40 percent from the field and has now lost two of three on a four-game road trip.

The bright spot for the Wizards this season had been their prized rookie guard Wall, who has made a strong start to his NBA career by averaging 18.1 points and just under 10 assists per game.

Chinese reserve forward Yi Jianlian also missed the game with a right knee bruise, the team said.

In Wall's absence, Arenas made his first start of the season and drained a trio of three-pointers one game after he scored a season-high 30 points against the Chicago Bulls.

Once the Wizards' franchise player, Arenas was suspended for the final 50 games of last season for bringing guns into the team's locker room and he has since taken a backseat following the arrival of Wall.

"Just from seeing him (Arenas) play the last game, I could tell that he was getting his confidence back," Blatche said. "It's great to have him back and playing at a high level."

In other games, it was: Lakers 118, Bucks 107; Bulls 95, Rockets 92; Nuggets 120, Knicks 118; Trail Blazers 100, Grizzlies 99; Cavaliers 101, 76ers 93; Hawks 102, Pacers 92.

In Milwaukee, Kobe Bryant scored 31 points and Shannon Brown added 16 of his 21 in the fourth quarter as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Milwaukee Bucks 118-107 to end a two-game losing streak.

Los Angeles had started with eight wins before the consecutive losses, but Brown and Bryant sparked the Lakers on both ends of the floor against what had been the stingiest defense in the NBA.

In Houston, Derrick Rose scored 17 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter as Chicago opened its seven-game road trip by beating Houston.

Rose also had seven assists, and Luol Deng added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulls.

Chicago won its fourth straight overall and earned its first victory in three road games this season.

Luis Scola scored 27 points and former Bull Brad Miller added 21 for the Rockets.

In Denver, Carmelo Anthony scored 26 points as the Nuggets edged New York.

Al Harrington chipped in 22 points against his former team and rookie Gary Forbes scored 19.

Amare Stoudemire led New York with 24 points. Rookie guard Landry Fields had a big game for New York, which lost its sixth straight.

In Memphis, Tennessee, Wesley Matthews, replacing injured guard Brandon Roy, scored a career-high 30 points for Portland.
