Wizards undone by Howard's Magic
THE Orlando Magic began life in their new Amway Center home with a dominating 112-83 victory over the Washington Wizards on Thursday.
Four-time All-Star Dwight Howard led the Magic with a double-double, scoring 23 points and 10 rebounds despite not playing in the final quarter of the season opener.
He was well supported by guard Vince Carter, who contributed 18 points and Jameer Nelson, who scored 16.
"It's great with the hoopla of the new building, but it was about business tonight and trying to get that first win under our belt in the quest for the championship," Carter said.
The excitement of the season opener at the new arena attracted NBA commissioner David Stern and golf world No. 1 Tiger Woods.
"I've traveled the world, and there's nothing really better than this facility," the commissioner said during the pre-game press ceremonies.
The sellout crowd of 18,918, a new franchise record, had plenty to cheer about in their new building as the Magic were dominant on the scoreboard and on rebounding, where they led the Wizards 53-25.
"This is our 21st year in Orlando, and we came here and we were welcomed warmly," team owner Rich DeVos told the crowd in a ceremony prior to the game. "We thank you tonight for joining us in this other step forward."
The Wizards were led by reserve Cartier Martin's 17 points while first-overall draft pick John Wall scored 14 points and nine assists on his NBA debut.
"For my first game to be a road game against a team that went to the Finals two years ago, it's pretty tough," Wall said. "We knew it was going to be a tough game and we came up pretty short. As a team, we have a lot to work on."
In Salt Lake City, Hakim Warrick and Steve Nash scored 18 points apiece to help Phoenix beat Utah 110-94.
