Woeful Sharks in another flop show
THE Shanghai Sharks' woeful away form continued with another defeat, this time against the Dongguan Leopards, who have overseas imports Shavlik Randolph and Josh Akognon to thank for their 107-99 victory.
Shanghai missed its star point guard Liu Wei, who is out with an injury, as the Leopards opened up a nine point lead at the end of the first quarter with three-pointers from Randolph and Gu Quan.
The introduction of Akognon in the second quarter caused further problems for the Sharks as the Nigerian quickly began to find his own scoring rhythm to help guide Dongguan to a 51-44 lead at the interval.
Shanghai returned after the break with renewed determination to make up the deficit as the trio of Ryan Forehan-Kelly, Michael Harris and Zhang Zhaoxu gave their side hope as the game became increasingly frenetic.
Though they would get tantalizingly close at times, the Sharks couldn't overhaul the advantage they had given Dongguan in the first quarter. With the Leopard's offence firing on all cylinders, the Sharks had too much to do with too little time.
In the end, Shanghai had rallied from its bad start to the game but simply couldn't catch the free-scoring Leopards, who were indebted to Randolph's 32 points and 17 rebounds for their win.
Forehan-Kelly had 24 points in another impressive performance while Zhang and Harris both made 20.
The Sharks will take heart from a hardworking performance but they know they will have to improve their overall game if they are to put an end to their dreadful away form (0-4 this season) when they visit Fujian on Sunday.
In other CBA action, Stephon Marbury scored 30 points to help the Beijing Ducks beat Zhejiang Bulls 101-98.
Also, Wilson Chandler scored 36 points as the Guangsha Lions lost to reigning champions, Guangdong Southern Tigers, 118-107.
