Yao Ming to tell public his career plan tomorrow
CHINESE basketball legend Yao Ming planned to officially announce his retirement and his future plan in a press conference at 2pm tomorrow, which will be broadcasted live to the whole country.
The press conference in a Pudong hotel has attracted more than 100 media organizations at home and abroad. Nearly 300 reporters will attend the highly guarded event and go through security checks.
The STV and CCTV sports channels will both devote 5 hours to their special coverage on Yao's press conference.
The 2.29-meter-tall Houston Rockets center is likely to announce his decision on his future career and Daryl Morey, general manager of Houston Rockets, is also expected to show up, according to local media.
Yao has played eight seasons for the Rockets in the American league of the National Basketball Association, but missed 250 regular season games due to repeated injuries in the past six years.
He also represented China many times to play at the Olympics and world championships.
Speculation was rift in recent weeks that the 30-year-old basketball giant would retire soon, but the Huston Rockets club remained silent on the matter. The NBA said it did not receive official retirement paperwork from Yao Ming.
Yao's contract with the Rockets expired on June 30 and the team expressed willingness to retake him if he came back healthy.
Yao said in April that his professional future depended on his recovery from a stress fracture in his left ankle.
