Yao adjusting to life off the court
RETIRED Chinese National Basketball Association star Yao Ming hailed a basketball competition being held near an iconic beach in Western Australia as a happy marriage of basketball and beach, which combined sports and tourism.
Played on a purpose-built court overlooking the beach, the first Cable Beach Invitational was launched in Broome, Western Australia, on Friday. The Shanghai Sharks, the Singapore Slingers, the Indonesian national team and the Perth Wildcats are taking part.
On the sidelines of the event, Yao, the owner of Shanghai Sharks, told Xinhua that he believed it was a good idea to play a game alongside the beach.
"It marks a wonderful combination, with which people may appreciate the game while enjoying their leisure time amid the beauty of nature without traveling much," he said.
Yao also said the beach invitational provided a creative platform for multicultural exchanges between people from different nations.
As for his retirement life, Yao said he plans to continue with his higher education at Shanghai Jiaotong University.
"I am at the stage of adjustment and trying to figure out how to make good use of my abundant time. Studying in college serves two purposes. First, I can learn some new knowledge, some basic knowledge in particular, which I believe is quite important. Second, by studying, I will calm down properly and adapt to my new life."
In the competition, the Sharks lost to the Wildcats 23-66 on Saturday following a 45-41 victory over Indonesia on Friday.
