Yao's fans, teammates congratulate him on baby girl
CHINA'S basketball figurehead Yao Ming has become a father as his wife Ye Li successfully gave birth to a baby girl this morning in the United States, Team Yao told Shanghai Daily.
Yao's daughter, whose name still remains a secret, was naturally delivered in a hospital in Houston, Texas yesterday afternoon local time. The baby girl weighed 3.6 kilograms and both the mother and daughter were safe, said Larry Zhang, Team Yao's Press Officer in Shanghai.
"(We're) Happy to announce the arrival of our baby daughter," the 29-year-old father said on his Facebook this morning. "This is a very special moment in our lives and we thank everyone for the kindness and support."
But Yao also expressed through his team his hope that his daughter could grow up in a peaceful atmosphere without too much attention from the media.
As Yao's daughter was born in the US, she automatically holds US citizenship; however, in the future she can also claim Chinese citizenship as the child of Chinese nationals. Chinese law does not recognize dual citizenship.
The nationality of Yao's daughter also became a heatedly discussed topic today. Thousands of netizens commented on the news on China's major portal Websites, and many expressed their understanding and support for Yao daughter's US citizenship.
A large number of Yao's current and former teammates, including Liu Wei and Yi Jianlian from China's national team, sent congratulations and blessings for Yao's daughter. Luis Scola, power forward of the Houston Rockets, even congratulated Yao in Chinese on his Twitter.
No immediate comment has been reported from the Chinese Basketball Association, where Yao started his career.
