Yi returns to Guangdong
WASHINGTON Wizards' Yi Jianlian will play for Guangdong Southern Tigers in the upcoming Chinese Basketball Association season which starts in November, the defending CBA champions confirmed at the weekend.
"Yi has signed a one-season contract with Southern Tigers with an option to leave once he accepts an invitation from NBA teams," Guangdong Southern Tigers' team manager Liu Hongjiang said.
The current National Basketball Association lockout, into its 102nd day yesterday, has forced a handful of super stars, including Utah's Andrei Kirilenko and San Antonio's Tony Parker to seek playing opportunities in Europe and Asia. Last month, Denver's Kenyon Martin joined CBA runner-up Xinjiang Flying Tigers. Los Angeles Lakers' Pau Gasol is practicing with his hometown team Barcelona.
Guangdong has won seven CBA titles in the last eight seasons, and Yi was instrumental in that between 2004 and 2006.
"Although he may not stay with us very long, I am quite sure his return will be good for him, the team and Chinese fans, as well," Liu said.
Yi was impressive at last month's Asian championship and many had expected him to land a new offer once the NBA labor dispute was settled.
