Yi shines as China grabs first victory

YI Jianlian scored 26 points to lead China to an 83-73 victory over Cote d'Ivoire in Ankara, Turkey, yesterday in the preliminary round of the world basketball championship.

Wang Shipeng added 25 points for China, which held a comfortable lead throughout the second half. The 2.1-meter Yi and the 1.98-meter Wang gave China an advantage inside.

Mouloukou Diabate had 20 points for Ivory Coast, which lost 47-86 to host Turkey in the tournament opener.

China, playing without injured NBA All-Star Yao Ming, bounced back from an 81-88 opening Group C defeat to Greece.

Elsewhere, Angola bounced back from a 50-point loss to Serbia to beat Jordan 79-65 in Group A.

The United States made it two wins out of two by defeating Slovenia 99-77 in Group B. In Group D, Lithuania rallied to edge Canada 70-68. It was Canada's second loss after falling 71-81 to Lebanon.
