De La Hoya eyes ring return

OSCAR De La Hoya, boxing’s former “Golden Boy” who retired in 2008, is considering a comeback at age 42, telling ESPN on Monday he is 50-50 on a ring return.
In a report on the sports television network’s website, De La Hoya said that he is clean and sober after twice undergoing rehabilitation for drugs and alcohol and as fit as ever.
“I feel great — 42 is the new 32,” De La Hoya said.
“I feel amazing. In my life right now, I have so much motivation. I am so hungry and so determined,” he added.
De La Hoya retired after Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao stopped him in the eighth round in 2008, delivering the US star’s fourth loss in his final seven fights. De La Hoya also lost to Shane Mosley in 2003 by unanimous decision and was knocked out in the ninth round by Bernard Hopkins in a 2004 showdown for the undisputed middleweight crown.
In 2007, De La Hoya lost a split decision to unbeaten compatriot Floyd Mayweather.
De La Hoya retired at 39-6 with 30 knockouts and was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame last year, five years after calling it quits.
“It’s got to be worth my while but this is very serious,” De La Hoya said. “I have to make sure I am fighting the very best. I don’t have to come back for financial reasons or the lights or the glamour. The only reason I would come back is because I miss the competition of fighting the very best.”
De La Hoya said he wants a rematch against Mayweather, which is unlikely, or a fight with Kazakh middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin at the junior middleweight level.
