FLOYD Mayweather Jr. is heading back to the ring after a year-long layoff, the American said on Tuesday.
Mayweather, 34, announced on Twitter that he would challenge current title holder Victor Ortiz on September 17 for the WBC championship. No location for the fight was mentioned.
"My fans have been waiting long enough," Mayweather tweeted. "Floyd Mayweather vs Victor Ortiz. Sept-17 2011 for the WBC World Championship."
Mayweather, 41-0 with 25 knockouts, has not fought since a unanimous decision over Shane Mosley on May 1, 2010. He has repeatedly declined to accept a bout against WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao - a dream ticket many boxing fans are eager to witness.
Instead, it was Mosley who squared off with Pacquiao in May, losing to the Filipino star in a lopsided 12-round decision.
Mayweather has won world titles at five different weights, super featherweight, lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight and super welterweight, and is ranked as the No. 1 challenger by the WBC despite his long inactivity.
Ortiz, 29-2-2 with 22 knockouts, won the WBC title by defeating Andre Berto in April. "I respect Mayweather because he has been a champion for many years and I know he will be ready, but so will I," the 24-year-old Mexican-American said.
