Referees told to stop lopsided fights

WORLD Boxing Council president Jose Sulaiman has urged referees to make better use of a rule introduced this month to end lopsided bouts early if one of the fighters has suffered a severe pounding.

Citing the example of Manny Pacquiao's crushing victory over Mexican Antonio Margarito last Saturday in Dallas, Texas, Sulaiman said safety had to be a priority, especially when a battered fighter refused to quit.

Margarito fought all 12 scheduled rounds against Filipino Pacquiao before ending the WBC super welterweight title bout with a broken right eye socket that required surgery.

"The WBC ... gives authority to referees to stop fights whenever they believe there's been too much punching from one side and there's no opportunity for the other boxer to win," Sulaiman said on Tuesday.

"When they see that a fighter has been punished very much ... they should stop the fight for the sake of safety. Safety is the backbone of the WBC."

Meanwhile, veteran promoter Bob Arum said he unwaveringly believes Manny Pacsquiao has become the best fighter ever.

Arum has worked with giants of the ring such as Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Roberto Duran but none of them, in his opinion, ever dominated with both fists in the manner of Pacquiao.

"I look at Manny as being the best that I've ever seen, including Ali," Arum said. "Ali was a great fighter and had great, great attributes and it's really unfair to compare a big guy like Ali with a little guy like Pacquiao.

"But when you look at the skill sets, Pacquiao is faster. Now you could say he is a little guy so he should be faster but Ali essentially had just the right hand. His left hand could jab and everything but it wasn't power punching."

In Arum's view, the 1.69-meter Pacquiao is different from any other fighter because he has become completely ambidextrous.

"His left and right hand hit with equal power and that is what destroys his opponents," the 78-year-old promoter said.

"They train to fight a left-handed guy and they watch out for his left hand but before they know it, they are getting pummeled by the right hand."
