Australia, Sri Lanka advance to semis

BRAD Haddin smashed 42 off 46 balls as Australia advanced to the World Twenty20 semifinals with a six-wicket win over the West Indies in Castries, St Lucia, on Tuesday which eliminated the hosts from the tournament.

Australia extended its streak to five matches by coasting to the winning total of 109-4 with 22 balls to spare at the Beausejour Stadium.

Opener David Warner got the Australian chase off to a strong start with 25 off 12 balls.

Batting first, the West Indies were dismissed for a modest 105 off 19 overs as legspinner Steve Smith returned figures of 3-20, David Hussey had 2-3 and Mitchell Johnson had 2-22.

Australia topped its Super Eight Group F and will next face defending champion Pakistan in the semifinals tomorrow. Group E winner England meets Sri Lanka today.

Earlier, Sri Lanka defeated India by five wickets off the last ball.

Chamara Kapugedera struck an unbeaten 37 off 16 balls, including a six off the final delivery from Ashish Nehra, to inspire Sri Lanka to its winning total of 167-5 off 20 overs after India had rattled up 163-5 in its innings.

Anchored the chase

Angelo Mathews hit an equally crucial 46 off 37 deliveries while skipper Kumar Sangakkara anchored the chase with 46 off 33 balls.

Paceman Vinay Kumar led India's bowling figures with 2-30 off four overs, while left-hander Suresh Raina topscored with 63 off 47 balls.

The West Indies needed to beat Australia by 24 runs or more to advance to the final four, but the sellout crowd of 12,000 was silenced when captain Chris Gayle fell in the opening over to Dirk Nannes - the tournament's leading wicket-taker. Gayle missed an on-drive and the ball deflected onto the stumps of his pads.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan steadied the innings with a stand of 34 off 28 balls, before Johnson claimed Chanderpaul to a deep catch on the leg-side.

Warner hit four fours and a gigantic six to set Australia's pursuit on its way. He and fellow opener Shane Watson (5) were dismissed off successive balls before Haddin and captain Michael Clarke (16) added 47 off 57 balls for the third wicket to settle the Australian chase.

Australia completed three wins out of three for Clarke's side in the Super Eight stage of a competition, where last year it was dumped out in the first round.
