Australia wins to level series
AUSTRALIA beat South Africa by two wickets in the second and final test to draw the series after a gripping fifth day at the Wanderers yesterday.
Bowlers Mitchell Johnson and 18-year-old debutant Pat Cummins guided their team to a victory target of 310 in fading light after the day's first session was washed out.
Australia resumed the day on 142 for three and after Ricky Ponting departed for 62, the tourists were reduced to 222-6 at tea, leaving the enthralling match in the balance with all four results possible.
However Australia edged home, 11 days after its embarrassing defeat at Newlands in Cape Town where it was bowled out for its lowest test score (47) in 109 years.
Australia lost Mike Hussey just before tea on 222-6 yesterday.
Hussey (39) and Haddin (24 not out) gave Australia hope with a 50-run partnership after the early loss of captain Michael Clarke and the crucial dismissal of Ponting for 62.
Vernon Philander (4-50) had Hussey lbw in the penultimate over before the break to leave the match and the series in the balance.
Clarke (2) went early, bowled by Philander, and Ponting's gritty half-century was ended when he edged an attempted cut off Morne Morkel to Jacques Rudolph at second slip.
