Benaud in hospital
Richie Benaud, the former Australia test captain who has become the doyen of TV cricket commentators around the world, is in a stable condition in hospital after an auto accident. The Nine Network yesterday said the 83-year-old Benaud was driving alone near his home in Sydney on Wednesday when his car hit a small brick wall. Benaud sustained chest and shoulder injuries and was expected to remain in hospital for a few days. “Despite being in some discomfort, the former Australian cricket captain and legendary allrounder remains in fine spirits and good humor,” Channel Nine said. Benaud played 63 tests for Australia as a leg-break bowler and allrounder in the 1950s and 60s, including 28 as captain.
