Bowlers on fire as Australia takes command in Brisbane

Mitchell Johnson’s unsettling pace and bounce led the carnage as England was routed for 136 in Brisbane yesterday, giving Australia a numerical and psychological advantage merely two days into the Ashes series.

Johnson, overlooked for the winter Ashes tour to England, snared four for 61 runs with some well-directed short-pitch bowling and worked in tandem with new-ball partner Ryan Harris, who took 3-28.

Offspinner Nathan Lyon took advantage from the opposite end, opening with three maiden overs and taking wickets with consecutive balls during a slide when England lost six wickets for nine runs in 58 balls.

Australia was 65 without loss at stumps in its second innings with David Warner on 45 and Chris Rogers on 15, extending its overall lead to 224 runs.

A dozen wickets fell after Australia resumed its first innings on the second morning at 273-8. Australia was dismissed for 295 within eight overs, with vice-captain Brad Haddin last man out for 94 and Stuart Broad finishing with six wickets for England.

Haddin was quickly back in action as wicketkeeper, gloving catches for the first two wickets to reach a milestone 200 dismissals in test cricket.

“The Gabba is one of those grounds where things can happen quite quick, especially with the extra bounce,” said Haddin, explaining how the wickets tumbled so suddenly. “Sometimes when you do get on a roll here it’s hard to stop.”

England was coasting at 55-1 in reply before Johnson dismissed Jonathan Trott (10) just before lunch.

That and some verbal encouragement from bowling coach Craig McDermott swung the momentum after the break.

Opener Michael Carberry top-scored with 40 in his second test and Broad, the pantomime villain for the local crowd, scored 32 in a rearguard innings to continue his excellent form after taking 6-81 with the ball.

Otherwise, the scorecard was grim reading for England.
