England ex-captain dies

Brian Close, the former England captain who was the youngest player to win a test cap for his country, has died. He was 84.

Yorkshire Cricket Club, where Close played his county cricket, announced his death yesterday. He had been ill for several months. Close made his test debut for England against New Zealand at Manchester in 1949, at 18 years and 149 days — a record which still stands. He played his last first-class match at the age of 55 in 1985, finishing only six runs short of 35,000 career runs at that level. He represented his country 22 times, seven times as captain.
