England holds slight edge over Aussies
IAN Bell was 56 not out as England reached 230-6 at tea yesterday on the third day of the first Ashes test against Australia for a lead of 165 runs.
Bell successfully referred an lbw decision from Shane Watson's bowling to hit eight boundaries from 134 balls, but the test remains perfectly balanced after two wickets fell both before and after lunch.
Ashton Agar, who earlier claimed his first test wicket when he had Alastair Cook caught for 50, has figures of 2-53 after also removing Jonny Bairstow for 15.
Peter Siddle then dismissed Matt Prior for 31, leaving Stuart Broad on 1 not out at tea.
England began the third day on 80-2, and after two days of unrelenting drama the first hour was comparatively slow, if no less nerve-wracking.
Kevin Pietersen (64) brought up his 50 with a drive off Starc in the 50th over, and Cook whipped Agar through midwicket to bring up the century partnership in the 54th. But there were few chances until Pietersen dragged Pattinson onto his stumps on the final ball before the drinks break three overs later with 121 on the board.
Cook reached his 50, from 164 balls, with a single from Agar. But the 19-year-old left-arm finger spinner removed him in the 60th with an off break that Clarke took high over his head to leave the total on 131-4.
