England makes strong reply in Durban
ENGLAND captain Andrew Strauss hit a rapid half-century yesterday to lead his team to 59-0 at tea in reply to South Africa's first innings of 343 on the second day of the second test in Durban.
Strauss was 50 not out off 49 balls at Kingsmead Stadium in his fastest test fifty as the Proteas bowlers, particularly Makhaya Ntini, presented him with plenty of balls to pull, cut and drive. Alastair Cook was unbeaten on 8 off 36 balls at the interval.
During tea, the covers were put on the pitch due to a light drizzle and play did not resume as scheduled at 3pm local time.
South Africa's Dale Steyn had earlier scored 47 in a last-wicket stand of 58 with Ntini in less than 13 overs to boost the hosts' total.
Steyn was denied a half-century when he feathered a catch to wicketkeeper Matt Prior off James Anderson after having smashed three fours and three sixes from 58 balls.
England offspinner Graeme Swann was the pick of the bowlers, taking two wickets yesterday to finish with 4-110 from 35 overs.
Swann dismissed Mark Boucher for 39 and Paul Harris for 2 after South Africa had resumed on 175-5 in an extended first session in cool, overcast conditions due to several overs being lost to bad light on Saturday.
Swann then took the wicket of Morne Morkel for 23 an over after lunch. AB de Villiers made 50 with six boundaries in almost 2 1/2 hours and put on 63 with Boucher, who was out leg before wicket to Swann bowling around the wicket after initially being given not out.
