England takes charge at Oval
JONATHAN Trott hit 83 not out to near a century on debut and steer England to 290-7 to lead by 462 runs at tea on the third day of the deciding fifth Ashes test against Australia at The Oval, London, yesterday.
The South Africa-born Trott, run out for 41 in the first innings, came in at 39-3 in the evening session on Friday with Australia fighting back and batted well enough to upstage Andrew Flintoff in his final test innings. England needs to win to regain the Ashes after Australia leveled the series at 1-1 with an innings win in the fourth test. The highest fourth-innings total to win a test at The Oval is 263-9 by England against Australia 107 years ago. The world record chase anywhere is 418.
