India reels as Cook slams double ton
ALASTAIR Cook reached 206 not out at lunch yesterday on the third day of the third test as England moved to 503-3 to extend its lead over India to 279 runs at Edgbaston.
Cook hit 27 fours from 394 balls in a typically solid and undemonstrative innings to notch up his second test double-century.
Eoin Morgan, who was twice dropped on Thursday, was 66 not out when an early lunch was called due to rain.
He hit eight boundaries in 121 balls.
The morning session had already been interrupted by a 26-minute rain delay when the players were again forced off at 12:37pm local time.
England began the day on 456-2, leading by 232, a position so dominant that the main interest in a session largely devoid of tension lay in seeing how many landmarks the hosts would pass.
Morgan reached 50 from 73 balls with a single from Praveen Kumar before rain caused a brief delay.
When play resumed, a single to Cook from Ishant Sharma brought up England's ninth century stand of the series. India has just one.
Cook reached his 200 from 378 balls with a glance through square leg of Sreesanth for two, then took England to 500 with a single from Sreesanth to point. Neither batsman appeared under any pressure, and with eight sessions remaining the only pressing question is how long England bat for before declaring.
On Thursday, Cook said he had to pass 150 before his mentor Graham Gooch took any notice.
"He doesn't really count anything under 150," Cook said of Gooch. "We talked about trying to make 'daddy' hundreds and I think my last three hundreds have been quite big ones, which is quite important.
"I think that (150) is the benchmark for a 'daddy' but you'll have to ask the great man himself."
The innings was timely for Cook, who failed in the first two tests, making 12 and 1 at Lord's and 2 and 5 at Trent Bridge.
"It's always nice to score runs and it's especially pleasing when you haven't scored in the last two test matches," he said.
"It's been frustrating not getting through that new ball and it's important when I did do that to make it count like I did today, which makes you forget the low scores."
