Indian Olympic chief slams cricketers for ignoring Games
INDIA'S Olympic chief has accused the country's cricket board of ignoring this year's Asian Games in China because there is no money on offer.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India this week cited prior international commitments for skipping the men's and women's Twenty20 tournaments at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, from November 12-27, despite India being a key driver in getting the sport included on the program.
"It has become commercial ... cricket has become very commercial," Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India late Wednesday. "There are only medals (in Olympic and Asian Games), no money. So, I don't think anybody from the cricket world will be interested in taking part."
Kalmadi said he hadn't been an advocate of including cricket as an Olympic sport because "then Olympic sports get hurt."
"They (BCCI) had done it in Malaysia Commonwealth Games also. They sent a second string team there," he said.
"So I was never keen and I did not put cricket into the Commonwealth Games. I knew they won't make it, they will back out at the last minute. They said they would come to the Asian Games, but they backed out. I knew this."
