Injury-hit Clarke fears for future
AUSTRALIA captain Michael Clarke says he “may never play again” due to a right hamstring injury sustained on the final day of the first test against India.
Clarke, who suffers from chronic back and hamstring issues, was sent for scans after limping from the Adelaide Oval during yesterday’s final day of the test won by 48 runs by Australia.
“The scans are not great, they have certainly showed a tear there,” Clarke said. “The experts are looking at them and I can pretty confidently say that I won’t take part in this series. There’s a chance I may never play again. I hope that’s not the case and I’ll be doing everything in my power to get back out on the park, but I have to be realistic as well.”
The 33-year-old Clarke said that with his history of injuries “there’s always that risk”.
On the first day of the Adelaide test, the first of a four-test series, Clarke had injections to soothe spasms in his back, retiring injured in the process. But he returned to the crease the next day to complete a century.
Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin is expected to be named captain of the Australia team for the remaining three tests of the India series, starting with next week’s second test in Brisbane.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon picked up seven wickets to lead Australia to victory after stand-in captain Virat Kohli scored an inspired century for the visitors.
Set 364 to win after Australia declared on its overnight score of 290-5, India seemed to be on its way to an unlikely victory after a brilliant 141 from Kohli and a gritty 99 from opener Murali Vijay.
But Lyon, a former groundsman at Adelaide Oval, turned the match around with his offspinners, as India’s tail collapsed and it was bowled out for 315.
