Jayasuriya to call it quits this month

SRI Lanka's opening batsman Sanath Jayasuriya will retire from all forms of international cricket after the first one-day match of the team's England tour later this month, he said yesterday.

"I called here to inform (you of) my retirement from all forms of (international) cricket after 20 years of play," Jayasuriya said in Colombo.

"I'll retire after playing a one-day and a T20 game," he said. Sri Lanka faces England in a Twenty20 match on June 25 before the first one-dayer at The Oval in London three days later.

The 41-year-old all-rounder, who quit test cricket in 2007, made the announcement after Sri Lanka Cricket recalled him for the T20 and one-day squads to face England after dropping Upul Tharanga.

Jayasuriya, who helped Sri Lanka to its only World Cup triumph in 1996, remains the island nation's highest run scorer in one-day internationals with 13,428 runs from 444 matches, second only to India's Sachin Tendulkar.

Jayasuriya has not played a limited-overs international for Sri Lanka since December 2009, and played his last Twenty20 a year ago.

Tharanga was axed from the squad after the International Cricket Council launched an investigation into his failed drugs test at the World Cup earlier this year.

"The ICC has informed Sri Lanka Cricket that Upul Tharanga has tested positive for the presence of a prohibited substance during a testing of a urine sample collected from him after the semifinal match v New Zealand on March 29 and a disciplinary charge has been initiated," a Sri Lanka Cricket statement said.

"Since there is an ongoing inquiry to verify this charge, Tharanga will not be available for selection until its conclusion and therefore will not be available for the one-day international and Twenty20 matches in England."

The 26-year-old has played 15 tests and 121 ODIs and scored a combined 12 centuries for Sri Lanka in both forms of the game.
