Jayasuriya to lead World XI in Pakistan
FORMER Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya will lead a World XI against a Pakistan All Stars side in two Twenty20 matches in Karachi this weekend, the first major international cricket in the country in over three years.
No test-playing side has visited Pakistan since 2009, when gunmen attacked the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore and killed six policemen and a van driver and injured players.
The matches have been organized by provincial sports minister Dr. Mohammad Ali Shah with players from West Indies, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan representing the World XI. Shah said around 5,000 policemen will be deployed as security around the teams, and hopes the short tour will "pave the way for other foreign teams to tour Pakistan."
"We hope that this small step will pave the way for other teams to tour Pakistan and by staging these matches we hope to send a clear message that our country is safe for international sports," Shah told a press conference.
Former West Indian batsman Alvin Kallicharan will be the manager of the World XI and includes Ricardo Powell, Steven Taylor, Jermaine Charles Lawson and Adam Sanford - all from the West Indies; Justin Kemp, Loots Bosman, Mthandeki Tschabalala, Andre Nel, Andre Johann Seymore and Nantie Hayward from South Africa; and Shapoor Zadran and Mohammad Shahzad Mohammadi of Afghanistan.
Pakistan will be led by Shahid Afridi and include Younis Khan, Nasir Jamshed, Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Umar Gul, Mohammad Sami, Wahab Riaz and Imran Nazir.
