Khawaja and Beer set for Aussie debut in last Ashes test
PAKISTAN-BORN Usman Khawaja and left-arm spinner Michael Beer will make their debuts as Australia bids to level the Ashes series in the fifth and final test against England.
Michael Clarke, who is deputizing for injured Ricky Ponting as Australia captain in Sydney, announced the starting XI at a news conference yesterday. Fast bowler Doug Bollinger was the squad member left out of the starting team for the final test of the series. Khawaja is expected to bat at No. 3, where Ponting usually bats for Australia.
"There will be two caps being presented tomorrow, the 11 has been picked," Clarke said. "Khawaja at 3 ... pretty much a given. It was important for the guys who are making their debut to get a decent sleep tonight. Also the excitement of making your test debut is a special part of playing your first test match. That adrenaline and goose bumps will start with them being named in the team."
England leads the series 2-1, ensuring it will retain the Ashes, and a win or draw at the Sydney Cricket Ground will deliver its first series win in Australia for 24 years.
The 24-year-old Khawaja will be the first Muslim to play cricket for Australia when he walks onto the Sydney Cricket Ground today.
Beer, 26, has risen considerably since he moved to Perth after failing to gain a spot in the Victoria state team. He was virtually assured of match selection at a ground which traditionally favors spin.
