Media swamp greets Clarke on return to New Zealand
AUSTRALIA vice-captain Michael Clarke was besieged by media yesterday when he rejoined the tour of New Zealand after a brief trip home and a highly publicized split from his fiance, model Lara Bingle.
Dozens of reporters, photographers and camera crews greeted Clarke when he arrived at Wellington airport from Sydney. Clarke quit the tour suddenly last week, on the eve of the Australian team's third limited-overs international against New Zealand, to support Bingle after a magazine published naked photographs of her.
The cricketer's manager has since confirmed that Clarke, 28, and Bingle, 22, have split and the model has left the couple's apartment in the beachside Sydney suburb of Bondi.
Clarke was met at the airport by Australian team management yesterday and escorted to a waiting car, refusing to answer questions about the break-up. Wearing sunglasses and reportedly looking drained, Clarke responded, "no comment, sorry guys" on at least six occasions.
Clarke was then greeted with a hug at the team hotel by his former teammate and current Australian batting coach Justin Langer. Australia captain Ricky Ponting reportedly welcomed Clarke with a more circumspect handshake.
Clarke returned to Sydney after Bingle gave an exclusive interview with an Australian magazine over a nude picture scandal.
She said a former boyfriend had circulated a photo of her taken in a shower during a relationship in 2006 and she was seeking to sue him in court.
Australian media earlier reported that Clarke had been opposed to Bingle granting the interview and that the story had caused a rift between the couple.
