Miandad: PCB chief too old
PAKISTAN cricket great Javed Miandad has added weight to calls for a change to the Pakistan Cricket Board hierarchy, describing chairman Ijaz Butt as "too old" for the position in a letter to the country's president.
"The chairman has become too old for the position he is holding as he seldom remembers his own important official commitments and agreements," Miandad, who is also a PCB director general, wrote in a letter to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari.
President Zardari is also the patron of the PCB and was responsible for appointing the 71-year-old Butt as chairman on October 2008 in place of Nasim Ashraf. Miandad also said he was not happy with the working style of the PCB chief.
"Most of the staff working under the chairman, including many directors, are fed up with his style of working; evidence of which is that many directors have left their jobs during his tenure," Miandad wrote.
Miandad wrote the letter last month after Butt publicly alleged that the PCB paid Miandad a monthly salary of rupees 10 million (US$11,750).
Miandad denied and said he was paid just over half of the amount what Butt had claimed.
The PCB director of cricket academies Aamir Sohail, chief operating officer Salim Altaf and chief selector Abdul Qadir all resigned last year after developing differences with Butt. Miandad himself quit in January 2009 before accepting the post of director general.
A parliamentary standing committee on sports has also recommended to the president that Butt be removed as PCB chief. "The chairman is being disapproved by the whole nation," Miandad said.
Miandad's scathing assessment comes as the Pakistan team goes through one of its worst playing periods, having failed to win a match on its just-completed tour of Australia. Australia won the one-day series 5-0 and the test series 3-0.
