New Zealand wins 6th in row
NEW Zealand entered the World Cup quarterfinals with a perfect six wins in the group stage and growing in confidence, despite appearing somewhat vulnerable at the end of a tight three-wicket win over Bangladesh yesterday.
Bangladesh’s Mahmudullah (128) scored his second consecutive century to set up a competitive 288 for seven. Opener Martin Guptill (105) set up the innings for New Zealand, before the tournament co-hosts showed some trepidation at the business end of the run chase.
Shakib Al Hasan picked up four wickets for 40 runs and troubled New Zealand’s middle order, but Daniel Vettori (16 not out) and Tim Southee (unbeaten on 12) guided the hosts home with seven balls to spare.
England’s miserable World Cup ended with a comfortable nine-wicket win over Afghanistan in a rain-marred Pool A clash in Sydney.
Chasing a revised target of 101 to win in 25 overs under the Duckworth/Lewis method following three rain delays, England finished on 101 for one in 18.1 overs. Afghanistan, after losing the toss, earlier made 111 for seven in 36.2 overs before its innings was ruled to be closed because of rain.
