Pakistan’s board wants Indian security assurances

THE Pakistan Cricket Board wants security assurances from India before it allows the team to travel to the World Twenty20 with its first group match at Kolkata scheduled for next Wednesday.

PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan briefed the team players and officials in Lahore yesterday and was hopeful the Indian government will publicly guarantee the Pakistan team’s safety during the tournament. “He (Khan) was hopeful that the security assurances would be given and the information pertaining to the security situation will be furnished to the government of Pakistan for their further directions in this regard,” PCB said in a statement.

Khan told the players the team’s departure will only be possible once India gives security assurances and the government of Pakistan also clears the tour.

The ICC has already moved Pakistan’s group match against host India to Kolkata on March 19 due to security concerns around playing in Dharamsala.

The Pakistan team was originally scheduled to fly out to Kolkata from Lahore on Wednesday.

In Nagpur, Sean Williams stroked a brisk fifty before the bowlers ensured a second straight win for Zimbabwe after beating Scotland by 11 runs in a World Twenty20 group encounter yesterday.

Williams hit 53 off 36 balls as Zimbabwe made 147-7. Wellingyon Masakadza then took 4-28 as Scotland was bowled out for 136 in 19.4 overs, Richie Berrington top scoring with 36.
