Panesar recalled for Ashes

ENGLAND recalled left-arm spinner Monty Panesar for the Ashes series in Australia in its 16-man squad named yesterday.

Batsman Kevin Pietersen returned after being dropped for the one-day internationals against Pakistan along with Ian Bell, who missed the four-match test series against the Pakistanis through injury.

Tim Bresnan and Chris Tremlett filled the last two fast bowling slots, alongside James Anderson, Steven Finn and Stuart Broad.

"We believe we've selected an outstanding test squad for what will be a fiercely contested Ashes series in Australia. In order to retain the Ashes we will need to play to a very high level and we believe we've selected a squad to do just that," chairman of selectors Geoff Miller said. "We feel that Chris Tremlett's inclusion will add a real threat of pace and bounce to our bowling attack given the conditions in Australia."

The 28-year-old Panesar, preferred to young leg-spinner Adil Rashid and off-spinner James Tredwell, last played a test in July 2009 when he famously batted out for a draw in the first Ashes match in Cardiff.

"Following an excellent season with Sussex, Monty Panesar deserves his opportunity to assume the role as England's second spinner behind Graeme Swann," Miller said.

"Monty has gone away and worked on his bowling since his last England appearance and he continues to be an attacking threat with the ball in his hand."

Panesar has 126 test wickets from 39 matches and claimed a five-wicket haul in his first Ashes test in Perth in 2006. The squad leaves for Australia on October 29 before starting the five-match test series in Brisbane on November 25.

On Wednesday, Eoin Morgan's unbeaten century for England ensured Pakistan ended its controversial tour on a low as the hosts won by 121 runs at The Rose Bowl in the fifth and deciding one-day international.

Pakistan, seeking consolation from a trip that will be best remembered for corruption allegations and off-field issues, was bowled out under the lights for 135 in 37 overs, chasing 257 for victory, to lose an ill-tempered series 3-2. Pakistan also lost the test series 3-1 and the Twenty20 series 2-0.

Pakistan crashed from 63 without loss to 104-6 and failed to recover thereafter, as offspinner Graeme Swann led the way with figures of 3-26 in nine overs.

Morgan earlier scored an unbeaten 107 off 101 deliveries, and helped take 19 runs from the 50th over, for his second unbeaten hundred on the ground this year after his match-winning 103 against Australia. Fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar impressed with 3-40 from his 10 overs.

Off the field, England threatened legal action against Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt yesterday unless he apologizes for alleging English players deliberately lost the ODI at The Oval last week.

The England and Wales Cricket Board and the Professional Cricketers' Association sent a letter to Butt on behalf of the team, seeking "a full and unreserved apology."

"Mr Butt has been advised that if a satisfactory response is not received, legal proceedings will be commenced against him without further notice," the ECB said.
