Pietersen, Bell to the rescue
Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell gave England a lifeline by batting through the middle session to reach tea on 211 for four in its first innings, 316 behind Australia on the third day of the third Ashes test yesterday.
Jonathan Trott was out early for five and captain Alastair Cook (62) fell shortly before lunch in a blow to the hosts after Australia amassed 527 for seven declared at Old Trafford.
However, Pietersen (78 not out) and Bell (51 not out) survived with some fortune to frustrate the tourists, who trail 0-2 in the five-match series.
On 62, Pietersen was struck on the pads but Shane Watson’s appeal for leg before was turned down. Australia captain Michael Clarke decided against a review but was informed by his team that television replays showed Pietersen would have been out.
