Proteas put Bangladesh on the brink

SOUTH Africa ensured top place in Group B and sent Bangladesh to the brink of World Cup elimination with a 206-run win in Mirpur outside Dhaka yesterday.

South Africa's win means India and England are also assured of quarterfinal places. West Indies can advance if it avoids a heavily lopsided defeat to India in Chennai today.

Bangladesh's only hope of advancing is for the West Indies to slump to a heavy defeat and fall behind on the net run rate for the tournament. Both teams are on six points.

South Africa got on top early, posting 284 for eight after winning the toss and electing to bat. Robin Peterson took 4-12 as Bangladesh was dismissed for 78 in 28 overs in a reply that never gathered momentum.

Bangladesh lost opener Tamim Iqbal for 5 in the fourth over and it quickly slumped to 36 for five, when fans started leaving Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Asked what he'd like to say to disappointed fans, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan simply said: "Just, sorry."

South Africa skipper Graeme Smith said his Proteas squad was hitting the kind of form which made them good prospects to win the tournament. "That'd be terrific. We're just going to take it a step at a time, change nothing and just keep going the way we are," he said. "Hopefully, a bit of luck, and we'll get there."

After Lonwabo Tsotsobe (3-14) made the early breakthroughs, dismissing Tamim Iqbal (5), Imrul Kayes (4) and Shahriar Nafees (5), Peterson struck to have Mushfiqur Rahim (3) caught by Smith and had Shakib caught behind for 30. He also bowled Naeem Islam (8) and Shafiul Islam (0).

A huge ironic roar went up in the stands when Bangladesh crawled past the 58-run mark, its lowest-ever one-day international score which it recorded against West Indies earlier in this event, but 20 runs later it was all over and Bangladesh became the only one of the three co-hosts not to reach the knockout stages.

Fellow co-host Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan are the qualifiers from Group A.

Bangladesh's collapse was in stark contrast to South Africa's measured innings.

Smith shared a 98-run opening stand with Hashim Amla (51) before he was stumped for 45.

Amla was out soon after, then Jacques Kallis shared stands of 34 with JP Duminy (17) and 82 with Faf du Plessis (52) before giving a return catch to Shakib and was out for 69.

Rubel Hossain took a wicket in the last over and finished with 3-56, while Shakib returned 2-46.
