Proteas put up big total as England bowlers toil

SOUTH Africa was bowled out for 418 in its first innings by England after tea yesterday on the second day of the first test.

Jacques Kallis hit his 32nd test century to score 120, while Jean Paul Duminy made 56, Mark Boucher 49 and Ashwell Prince 45 at Centurion, Pretoria.

England offspinner Graeme Swann claimed 5-110 from 45.2 overs for his third five-wicket haul in 13 tests. Seamer Graham Onions took 3-86 from 30 overs and James Anderson and Stuart Broad picked up one wicket each.

The South Africa's wagging tail kept England toiling under the hot sun.

After England had dismissed overnight batsmen Kallis and Duminy in the morning session, South Africa went to lunch on 330 for six.

However, the afternoon turned sour for England as Boucher hit 49, Paul Harris 33 not out and debutante Friedel de Wet 12 not out.

England paid dearly for Onions dropping Boucher on 25 at fine leg off Broad, with South Africa on 318-6, as the wicketkeeper guided the tail on an occasionally unpredictable pitch.

Swann eventually had Boucher caught at short-leg one run short of a 30th test half-century.

Morne Morkel used the umpire decision review system before lunch to successfully overturn a leg before wicket appeal by Swann, was hit on the chin by Onions and then edged the same bowler to wicketkeeper Matt Prior to be dismissed for 13.

The unorthodox, obdurate Harris proved a pest with the bat, however, hanging around for 101 minutes and collecting four boundaries.

De Wet celebrated his debut by getting off the mark with a superb cover-drive for four off Swann and repeated the treatment three balls later.

South Africa began the second day on 262-4, with Kallis on 112 and Duminy on 38, and endured a troubled morning as both overnight batsmen were dismissed after adding 124 runs for the fifth wicket.

Kallis edged Anderson to Paul Collingwood at second slip and Duminy edged Swann to the same fielder to give Collingwood his fourth catch of the innings and a share of the England record.

Swann looked dangerous, occasionally obtaining sharp turn, while Onions was the most successful of the fast bowlers.

On Wednesday, Kallis hit his 32nd test century. His 112 not out gave the hosts the advantage after they had been sent in to bat and lost two wickets in each of the first two sessions.

South Africa's leading run-scorer batted for 278 minutes and faced 203 balls, stroking 14 fours and an imperious six off Swann. Kallis and AB de Villiers put on 66 for the fourth wicket.
