Proteas show solidarity with captain du Plessis
THE South African cricket team rallied behind beleaguered captain Faf du Plessis yesterday as he faces allegations of ball tampering following the second test against Australia.
Du Plessis is accused of shining the ball while having a sweet in his mouth during the match at Hobart which South Africa won by an innings and 81 runs to clinch a 2-0 win in the three-test series. Top-order batsman Hashim Amla was designated to speak to reporters yesterday but the full South African squad attended the news conference, standing behind Amla to symbolize their solidarity with du Plessis. Amla called the allegation “ridiculous” and “the reason everyone is here is to stand together, really, and to show solidarity. We thought it was actually a joke”.
