Rain, Amla frustrate India in 2nd test

SOUTH Africa has seven wickets left to bat through three sessions to save the second test against India and win the two-match series after losing three for 109 runs yesterday on a fourth day cut short by rain and bad light.

Hashim Amla was 49 not out and Ashwell Prince yet to score as the Proteas reached 115-3 after resuming on 6-0 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, eastern India.

India spinner Amit Mishra trapped captain Graeme Smith leg before wicket for 20 and had Jacques Kallis caught by wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for 20 to finish with 2-15 from seven overs.

Alviro Petersen was the other wicket to fall, caught on 21 by Subramaniam Badrinath off Harbhajan Singh.

Amla was lucky to escape when dropped by Murali Vijay at backward short leg off Harbhajan on 14.

Only 34.1 overs were bowled due to rain and bad light.

India declared its first innings at 643-6 on Tuesday in reply to South Africa's 296 all out.

The Proteas hold a 1-0 lead and are bidding to win their first series on Indian soil for a decade and leapfrog the hosts at the top of the world rankings.

South Africa won the first test by an innings and six runs at Nagpur last week.
